A Trick to Ward Off the Psoriasis Itch: Shave Your Head

Written by Psoriasis Guru on September 21st, 2009

I’m a guy so I have the option of shaving my head instead of getting a regular haircut every month or two.  In addition to saving me a lot of money on haircuts, this also seems to help with my itchy scalp.

Some believe that UV rays help to treat psoriasis, which I have found to be true… most of the time.  When I shave my head, more sunlight reaches my scalp, which seems to suppress the psoriasis that plagues my skin.  At the same time, in accordance with several medical investigations I have found online, too much sunlight seems to irritate my scalp even more than no sunlight at all.

I started to feel itchy scalp symptoms only after I started spending almost all my time indoors (since I got a desk job about 3 years ago).  This seems to agree with some medical studies, which indicate that at least some sunlight is an effective psoriasis suppressor.  Then again, psoriasis has been known to come and go with years of reprieve in the interim, so this might just be the result of this whimsical condition bearing it’s ugly head whenever it feels like it.

As far as shaving my head goes, I have also found that the exposure to more fresh air makes my scalp feel better.  When ever I can feel the cool breeze on my mostly shaved head, my itchy psoriasis seems at least a little further away than before.
