All of the medical resources I have found thus far agree that there is, as of yet, no conclusive evidence that coal tar causes cancer.
Some points to consider:
- People who work in coal tar manufacturing plants are at higher risk of developing skin cancer.
- Some of the chemicals found in coal tar have been found to be carcinogenic (cancer-causing).
To set your mind at ease, however, this substance (like any other common substance that is used medicinally) is under constant testing and scrutiny by the medical / scientific community. As soon as an scientist finds any correlation between coal tar and cancer this news will most likely spread like wildflower.
At this point I am not particularly worried. Also, I really don’t want coal tar to go away since (in the form of Neutrogena’s T-Gel) it is the most effective treatment I have found thus far to suppress my daily psoriasis itch.
