Zinc Pyrithione

Monday, October 12th, 2009

Zinc pyrithione is the active ingredient present in a variety of mainstream anti-dandruf shampoos such as Head and Shoulders, Tigi Bed Head Shampoo, Herbal Essences, Selsun Salon, Redken, Pantene Pro V and Biolage. Due to its anti-fungal and antibacterial nature, zinc pyrithione has been confirmed as an effective treatment for dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis.

Similar scalp treatments include chloroxine and selenium sulfide.

Zinc pyrithione also seems to slow the production of skin cells, which is one of the main symptoms of psoriasis.

Skin Cap (available through BeautyWorks.com) is one of the main products you can buy over the counter that offers therapeutic concentrations of zinc pyrithione for the purpose of treating psoriasis.  It comes in the form of aerosol spray, shampoo and lotion.  Recommended dosage is twice daily.  Several sources report dramatic reductions in scaling, itchiness and inflammation within a few weeks of using this compound.

Zinc pyrithione is intended for topical use only.

Side effects of this product seem to be mild, but you should consult your dermatologist to make sure.

Is Capitrol (chloroxine) an Effective Treatment for Psoriasis?

Monday, October 12th, 2009

Capitrol is a a shampoo designed to treat dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp.  Capitrol is similar in purpose and function to Selsun Blue except that Selsun Blue’s active ingredient is selenium sulfide and Capitrol’s active ingredient is chloroxine.

Chloroxine may be an effective treatment for mild psoriasis of the scalp so far as it helps to keep itching as well as some kinds of skin cell proliferation under control.  Like selenium sulfide, chloroxine has anti-fungal properties and is also suspected to have anti-bacterial traits as well.  Chloroxine is also suspected to hinder excessive skin cell mitosis (cell division).

Capitrol is available by prescription only.

Selsun Blue — Selenium Sulfide as a Psoriasis Treatment

Monday, October 12th, 2009

Selsun Blue is available with two concentrations of selenium sulfide — 1% over the counter and 2.5% by prescription.  Selenium Sulfide is designed to prevent excessive fungus growth (Malassezia) that feeds off of the oils of the skin, thus leading to itchiness and dandruff.

Selsun Blue is designed mainly to resist seborrheic dermatitis, however selenium sulfide has also been proven to prevent the excessive production of keratinocytes, which make up most of the epidermis (the outer part of the skin), thus preventing one of the main symptoms of psoriasis.

Example of typical Selsun Blue shampoo, this particular kind contains Menthol as well to suppress itchiness (pruritus):

There are a variety of other Selsun blue variations, including types that stress natural ingredients such as Aloe Vera.
