Florida Building Code Stair Requirements

When planning a building or construction project, it is important to be aware of the stair requirements mandated by the Florida Building Code. Stairs are an integral part of any building, and must meet certain safety and structural standards in order to ensure the safety of all occupants. Understanding the stair requirements outlined in the Florida Building Code can help you ensure that your project meets all legal and safety requirements.

The Florida Building Code was established in 2002, and is updated every three years. The code sets forth rules and regulations for the design, construction, and maintenance of all building structures in the state. This includes stair requirements for both commercial and residential buildings. The code specifies the minimum width of stairs, the number of risers, the maximum rise and run, and the grade of handrails that must be used. It also outlines the requirements for the installation of guardrails and handrails.

When designing a staircase, the first step is to determine the number of risers required. According to the Florida Building Code, the maximum number of risers that can be used in a single flight of stairs is 12. The minimum width of each tread must be at least 10 inches, with a maximum rise of 7 3/4 inches and a minimum run of 11 inches. The maximum rise and run should not exceed 8 3/4 inches and 12 inches, respectively. In addition, the Florida Building Code requires that all stairs must have a grade of handrail that is 34 to 38 inches above the nosing of the stair.

Guardrails are also a critical safety feature for stairs, and must be installed along the open sides of a stairway. According to the Florida Building Code, guardrails must be at least 36 inches high, and either a solid wall or balusters can be used. The balusters must be spaced no more than 4 inches apart, and any openings between the balusters must not allow a 4-inch sphere to pass through. Handrails must also be installed on both sides of the staircase, and must be 30 to 38 inches high.

Adhering to the Florida Building Code stair requirements is essential for ensuring a safe and structurally sound staircase. Knowing the specifics of the code can help you ensure that your project meets all safety and legal requirements, and that all occupants remain safe. With proper planning and implementation, you can create a staircase that is both safe and aesthetically pleasing.
