Mexico Christmas Decorating Traditions

With its vibrant culture and bustling cities, it's no wonder Mexico is one of the most popular destinations for holiday travel. But while many travelers flock to Mexico for its sunny beaches and lively nightlife, the country also has a rich history of Christmas traditions that are as diverse as the people who celebrate them. From colorful decorations to sweet treats, Mexico offers plenty of ways to get into the holiday spirit. Here’s a look at some of the unique Mexican Christmas decorating traditions that will make your holiday celebration extra special.

One of the most popular Mexican Christmas decorations is the nacimiento or nativity scene. These scenes feature the traditional figures of the Virgin Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus, usually accompanied by animals and other characters from the Bible. They are often displayed in churches or homes, and can be made from any number of materials, including clay, wood, paper mache, or even fabric. You may also find nacimientos in public spaces like parks or plazas, where they are illuminated with tiny twinkle lights.

In addition to nacimientos, Mexican Christmas decorations often include piñatas. These brightly colored paper mache ornaments are filled with small gifts or treats such as candy, nuts, and dried fruit, and are hung from the ceiling or walls to create an eye-catching display. On Christmas Eve, families gather around the piñata and take turns hitting it until it breaks open and the goodies inside spill out. This is a fun way for children to get involved in the festivities and it’s sure to bring lots of smiles.
