The holiday season has come and gone, and as much as we may not want to admit it, it’s time to take down the Christmas decorations. While we’re sure that many of us are still trying to savor the last few days of Yuletide cheer, there’s an official day to take our decorations down: January 6th, also known as the Feast of the Epiphany, or Three Kings’ Day.
For those of us who celebrate Christmas, taking down the decorations can be a bittersweet task. We’ve spent weeks (or months!) carefully placing each ornament, stringing up garland, and hanging all of our stockings with care. But while we might be sad to see the decorations go, the official day to take them down helps us mark the end of the festive season with a proper sense of closure.
January 6th has been designated as the day to take down Christmas decorations for centuries. The tradition is rooted in the biblical story of the Three Wise Men (also known as the Magi) who, according to scripture, followed a star to Bethlehem in search of the baby Jesus. In some countries, this day is still celebrated with special parades and feasts in honor of the Magi. In other countries, it’s simply become a way to mark the end of the holiday season.
