At the White House, Christmas decorations are a time-honored tradition that dates back to the first official White House Christmas tree in 1889. In 2017, the Trump Administration has put its own stamp on the holiday decor, with a mix of traditional and modern elements. From a glittering gold Christmas tree to a dazzling display of lights, the White House is ready to get into the holiday spirit.
This year, the White House decorations embrace the theme of “Time-Honored Traditions” which pays homage to 200 years of holiday celebrations at the Executive Mansion. Visitors to the White House will find a variety of decorations, including a larger-than-life 18-foot Fraser fir tree in the Grand Foyer, adorned with more than 14,000 ornaments, and topped with a beautiful star. The East Colonnade is also decked out in festive finery, with a unique display of 45 red stockings hung with care, representing all 44 presidents and the current First Family.
Throughout the residence, visitors will see a mix of classic decorations, including a gingerbread replica of the White House, as well as modern touches like a collection of nutcrackers and a giant tree adorned with thousands of LED lights. On the White House lawn, the National Christmas Tree stands tall, surrounded by 56 smaller trees, representing each of the 50 United States, five territories, and the District of Columbia.
The White House decorations bring together a combination of old-fashioned charm and new-age glamour. In the State Dining Room, the tables are set with gold and silver accents, while the walls display a stunning array of holiday wreaths made from natural materials. The China Room features an elaborate collection of china and porcelain pieces, while the Red Room boasts a beautiful garland of red and green.
In addition to the decorations, the White House Christmas celebration includes a number of special events. On the evening of December 1, the President and First Lady host a reception for members of the military and their families. Later in the month, the President hosts a reception for members of Congress, and on Christmas Day, the First Family opens the White House doors to visitors.
No matter what your holiday traditions may be, there’s no doubt that the White House decorations for Christmas 2017 will be memorable. From the traditional Fraser fir tree to the modern LED lights, the holiday spirit is sure to shine bright inside the Executive Mansion.
